A sugar mill is planned in Indora, Kangra, to boost sugarcane farming and benefit farmers. Officials are studying land, finances, and resources for feasibility. With 719 hectares under cultivation, a local mill will reduce transport costs. The Agriculture Department is promoting high-yield varieties, and the government aims to strengthen the region’s sugar industry.
Dharmshala: Plans are there to set up sugar mill in the Indora Assembly constituency of Kangra district. Following the directives of the Chief Minister, feasibility studies for this project are currently underway. This initiative aims to boost sugarcane production in the region and strengthen the financial condition of farmers.
A key meeting regarding this project was held on Friday at the Deputy Commissioner’s office. During the meeting, Deputy Commissioner Hemraj Bairwa instructed the Agriculture Department and SDM to conduct a detailed study on the financial provisions, land availability, and technical resources required for the sugar mill. A comprehensive report on these aspects has been requested.
The Deputy Commissioner highlighted that Indora’s climate and soil are well-suited for sugarcane cultivation. Additionally, there are barren lands available in several areas. The Agriculture Department has been directed to take necessary steps to encourage farmers to grow sugarcane. Officials have also been asked to prepare a report on the availability of high-yield sugarcane varieties and seed options for the proposed mill.
Bairwa stated that the Agriculture Department already possesses land in Indora that can be used for setting up the sugar mill. Currently, sugarcane is cultivated on 719 hectares in the region, but farmers are forced to transport their produce to sugar mills in neighbouring states. With the establishment of a sugar mill in Indora, farmers will be able to sell their crops locally at fair prices, saving both time and costs.
He reaffirmed the government’s resolve to assist sugarcane farmers and develop the sugar industry in the state. A detailed discussion was also conducted with experts through virtual conferencing. ADC Vinay Kumar and officials from the Industries Department, Agriculture Department, Horticulture Department, and Cooperative Department were present at the meeting.
