Honeywell and SGP BioEnergy to develop plant-based biochemicals
Honeywell and SGP BioEnergy announced a partnership to develop technology for converting industrial hemp and plant-based materials into biochemicals, offering sustainable alternatives to fossil fuel-derived chemicals. Honeywell will focus on scalable technology development, while SGP BioEnergy provides infrastructure and second-generation feedstocks, including industrial hemp. The collaboration supports biochemicals for plastics and aligns with global decarbonization efforts.
On October 8, Honeywell and SGP BioEnergy announced a partnership to develop innovative, scalable technology aimed at converting industrial hemp and other plant-based materials into biochemicals. These biochemicals can be utilized in the production of plastics and other everyday products, serving as a sustainable alternative to fossil fuel-derived chemicals.
In this collaboration, Honeywell will focus on creating the technology that allows for plant materials to be used as feedstock for large-scale biochemical production. SGP BioEnergy will contribute by providing the necessary infrastructure, workforce, and second-generation feedstock, including industrial hemp, through its “READY.GROW.” program.
To ensure the safe and efficient operation of this initiative, Honeywell will offer ongoing operational support and training for SGP BioEnergy’s team. This partnership aligns with Honeywell’s strategy to adapt its portfolio in response to key megatrends, including the energy transition.
“Honeywell is dedicated to developing innovative solutions that facilitate the energy transition. This advanced technology will allow for the production of a range of petrochemical alternatives from second-generation feedstocks,” stated Bryan Glover, chief technology and growth officer of Honeywell Energy and Sustainability Solutions. “By utilizing hemp and other non-edible feedstocks, Honeywell and SGP BioEnergy are working to decrease the world’s dependence on fossil fuels while safeguarding the food supply.”
“Advancements in biochemicals and biomass usage are ushering in a transformative era. The demand from global stakeholders is increasing, and many are aligning their policies to promote cleaner, safer solutions,” said Randy Delbert Letang, founder, president, and CEO of SGP BioEnergy. “Honeywell’s expertise, technological leadership, and commitment to accelerating the energy transition make it an ideal partner for our initiative, which supports our ‘Zero Waste Ecosystem’ model and ongoing decarbonization efforts.”
