Hyderabad : Fine rice distribution will be game changer: Uttam

Telangana has launched India’s first free fine rice distribution scheme, benefiting over 3.1 crore people. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy emphasized that this initiative ensures food security with dignity, providing six kilograms of fine rice per person monthly at no cost. The scheme aims to curb previous misuse associated with coarse rice distribution.
Hyderabad: Irrigation and civil supplies minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy on Sunday said the fine variety of rice scheme launched by Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy is the country’s first scheme aimed at ensuring food security with dignity to the poor.
Addressing a public meeting in Huzurnagar assembly constituency where the CM formally launched the scheme, Uttam emphasised that coarse rice distributed earlier was rejected by beneficiaries, leading to rampant misuse. “Earlier, 80-90% of the ration rice was diverted due to its poor quality. The switch over to fine rice is going to be a game changer in India’s food security landscape,” he said.
Explaining the reforms, he said at the time of Telangana formation, the state had 89.73 lakh ration cards, and during the 10-year BRS rule, only 49,479 new cards were issued. In contrast, the Congress govt has reopened applications and started adding eligible family members to existing ones. Currently, Telangana has 90.22 lakh ration cards, covering 2.85 crore people. With pending applications being cleared, this number would rise to a crore cards covering 3.10 crore beneficiaries, achieving near saturation, he said.
During the public meeting, Uttam Kumar Reddy made two specific requests to the chief minister: an agriculture college for Huzurnagar and a Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya for Suryapet district, noting that a location was already identified in Kodad.
Revanth Reddy responded positively to both proposals and assured that steps would be taken.
