Hyderabad : Fine Rice Prices Are Falling

Hyderabad: Fine rice prices in Telangana are falling due to increased cultivation, boosted by a ₹500 per quintal bonus from the state government. Prices have dropped ₹10-15 per kg in wholesale markets. With high production and government distribution plans, prices may decline further. Traders cite additional factors, including subsidized ‘Bharat Brand’ rice sales, affecting rates.

Hyderabad :  Prices of the fine rice are coming down in the state.  The state government is giving a bonus of Rs. 500 per quintal to encourage the cultivation of fine varieties of rice, and their cultivation and production have increased significantly.

Prices are coming down significantly as fine rice is available in abundance in the market.  Rice exporters say that this has affected not only Telangana but also Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.  Before the bonus, the prices of premium fine rice in the state were Rs. 60-70 per kg.  Currently, it is available for Rs. 50-55.

The fine variety was Rs. 55-60.  Now, it is available for Rs. 43048.  These are the wholesale market prices.  Depending on the variety, it has come down by Rs. 10-15 per kg compared to the previous price.  However, retailers are reducing the price by only Rs. 5-8 per kg.

The central government has announced the support price for paddy at Rs. 2,320 for grade ‘A’ and Rs. 2,300 for regular variety. The Telangana government has purchased the paddy from farmers at Rs. 2,820 along with a bonus of Rs. 500.  It is implementing this from the 2024 Kharif (rainy season).

With the bonus announcement, the cultivation of paddy in the state has increased by more than 50 per cent in 2024 Kharif compared to 2023 Kharif.  The yield has increased accordingly.  A total of 144.80 lakh tonnes of paddy was produced in 2023-24 Kharif.

The total yield of paddy in 2024-25 is 145.56 lakh tonnes.  Of this, fine paddy is 88.39 lakh tonnes, while doddu paddy is 57.17 lakh tonnes.  As a result of the high yield, the supply of fine rice in the market has also increased significantly and prices are falling.

Every season, millers and traders from neighboring states buy large quantities of fine rice from Telangana.  Rice millers say that prices have come down in those states too as the supply  of fine rice has increased.  Traders say that other reasons are also having some impact on the price drop.

Fine rice is coming to the state from states like Uttar Pradesh, Odisha and Bihar.  They say that the central government’s launch of subsidized rice sales under the name ‘Bharat Brand’ a few months ago is also having some impact.

The state government is preparing to distribute fine rice through ration shops.  In this context, there are chances of further reduction in the prices of fine rice.

The rice market is currently stagnant.  Sales have decreased.  Poor and middle-class families who have ration cards are not buying fine rice.  They are waiting for the fine rice distributed by the government, said Ganapathi Reddy, president of the Telangana Raw Rice Millers Association.
