India climbs the Great Wall to emerge as world’s top rice producer

India has become the world’s top rice producer, with 2024-25 output estimated at over 149 million tonnes, surpassing China. This milestone reflects the efforts of agricultural scientists and supportive state policies. USDA data shows China’s rice output at 144.62 mt, making India number one. Projections suggest India will maintain its lead in 2025-26 as well.
This is another new normal from India. It has emerged as the world’s largest producer of rice, with its output in the 2024-25 season to June estimated at over 149 million tonnes (mt). India has been able to achieve this, thanks to the efforts of agricultural scientists and some States’ continued incentives for the paddy crop.
The government will release the crop production estimates soon, in which the production of rice has been estimated to be over 149 million tonnes (mt). This relegates China to the number two position.
According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) data, China’s rice production is estimated to be 144.62 mt in 2024-25. The agency projected production in 2025-26 to be 148 mt in India and 145.28 mt in China.
