India looking at raising ethanol blending with petrol to more than 20 per cent: Hardeep Singh Puri
India aims to exceed 20% ethanol blending in petrol, with a NITI Aayog committee reviewing the goal, according to Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri. Ethanol blending reached 19.6% in January 2025, the highest recorded. PSU oil firms received 200.8 crore liters from November 2024 to January 2025, supporting India’s net-zero emissions target by 2045.
India is aiming to increase its ethanol blending target with petrol to over 20%, and has established a committee under NITI Aayog to look into it, stated Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on February 26, 2025.
Speaking at the Advantage Assam 2.0 business summit, he highlighted that a blending rate of 19.6% has already been reached.
“We are targeting more than 20% blending of biofuels. A group from NITI Aayog has already been formed to look into this,” he stated.
Puri also emphasized that all fossil fuel companies in India are committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2045, despite the country’s developmental challenges.
In the ongoing Ethanol Supply Year (ESY) 2024-25, ethanol blending in petrol reached 19.6 per cent in January, and cumulative average ethanol blending from November 2024 to January 2025 touched 17.4 per cent. The ethanol blending percentage achieved in January 2025 is the highest to date.
PSU oil marketing companies (OMCs) received 91.7 crore liters of ethanol under the EBP program in January 2025, bringing the cumulative total to 200.8 crore liters from November 2024 to January 2024.
According to available official data, the ethanol blended under the EBP program in January 2025 amounted to 82.1 crore liters, totaling 222.9 crore liters from November 2024 to January 2025.
