India nears 20 per cent ethanol blending target; blending in January stands at 19.6 per cent

India is nearing its 20% ethanol blending target, reaching 19.6% in January 2025. Ethanol supply hit 222.9 crore liters from November 2024 to January 2025. The government aims for 1,016 crore liters annually to cut fuel imports. Ethanol blending has surged from 38 crore liters in 2013-14 to 707.4 crore liters in 2023-24.
Significant progress in the ethanol blending program is ongoing, as India is close to achieving the target of 20 per cent ethanol blending.
In the ongoing Ethanol Supply Year (ESY) 2024-25, ethanol blending in petrol reached 19.6 per cent in January, and cumulative average ethanol blending from November 2024 to January 2025 touched 17.4 per cent. The ethanol blending percentage achieved in January 2025 is the highest to date.
PSU oil marketing companies (OMCs) received 91.7 crore liters of ethanol under the EBP program in January 2025, bringing the cumulative total to 200.8 crore liters from November 2024 to January 2024.
According to available official data, the ethanol blended under the EBP program in January 2025 amounted to 82.1 crore liters, totaling 222.9 crore liters from November 2024 to January 2025.

As per the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas (MoPNG), under the EBP program, ethanol supplies have increased from 38 crore liters in ESY 2013-14 to 707.4 crore liters in ESY 2023-24, achieving an average blending of 14.6 per cent ethanol in petrol.
The government has set a target of 20 per cent ethanol blending by 2025 and is confident of achieving this goal. To meet this target, approximately 1,016 crore liters of ethanol will be required, totaling 1,350 crore liters when accounting for other uses.
The push for ethanol blending is part of the government’s effort to reduce reliance on imported fuel.
