India sets ambitious wheat production target for 2025/26

India set a 2025/26 Rabi wheat production target of 119 million tonnes, up 1.26% from last year’s record. Overall Rabi cereal goals are 171.14 million tonnes toward a 362.5-million-tonne annual target. Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan emphasized pulses, oilseeds, secured seeds, GST benefits, fertiliser supply, and the Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan for farmer support.
The Indian government has set an ambitious target for wheat production for the Rabi season 2025/26, setting it at 119 million tonnes, 1.26% higher than the previous season’s record of 117.51 million tonnes, Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said at the concluding session of the National Agriculture Conference – Rabi Abhiyan 2025, which concluded on September 16, 2025 in New Delhi. The target is 3.47% higher than last year’s target of 115 million tonnes, reflecting the government’s confidence in the growth of the agricultural sector.
The overall target for Rabi 2025/26 MY production of cereals is 171.14 million tonnes, which is part of the national target of 362.50 million tonnes for the entire agricultural year (July 2025-June 2026), which is 2.4% higher than the previous year’s 353.96 million tonnes. Chauhan highlighted that 25 million tonnes of seeds have already been secured for the Rabi sowing campaign, which is more than the required quantity of 22.9 million tonnes. This ensures a stable start to the season despite the challenges posed by recent heavy rains in various parts of the country.
The minister also stressed on the need to focus on pulses and oilseeds as India’s production of rice and wheat has already reached world class levels. A roadmap will be developed to increase the yield of these crops with a focus on per hectare productivity. Chauhan also urged companies to pass on the benefits of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) reduction to farmers to help them reduce their input costs.
To support farmers, the Indian government is launching the ‘Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan’ campaign from October 3, covering the Rabi season. Over 2,000 teams comprising representatives from central and state agriculture departments, scientists from Krishi Vigyan Kendras, agricultural universities, farmer organisations and progressive farmers will visit villages to provide advice and guidance. The initiative aims to ensure timely access to knowledge and resources to improve yields.
The increase in area sown due to heavy rains is expected to increase the demand for fertilisers. Chauhan assured that the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers will coordinate the supply of the necessary inputs as per the requirements of the states. The government is also conducting a phased analysis of crop production, particularly cotton and soybean, to develop specific measures to increase production of key crops in the Rabi season.
