India sets historic grain production record

India has achieved a record 357 million tonnes of food grain production, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, attributing the 100-million-tonne rise over a decade to irrigation expansion, modern farm technologies and high-yielding varieties. He added that honey output has doubled to over 150,000 tonnes, boosted by the Honey Mission’s distribution of 225,000 beehives.

India has achieved its highest ever food grain production of 357 million tonnes, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in an address. He said the country has increased its production by 100 million tonnes in the last ten years, thanks to modernisation of the agricultural sector and introduction of new technologies in farms.

Modi said that the development of irrigation infrastructure, farmer support programmes and expansion of areas under high-yielding varieties have contributed to this growth. He said that India is now confidently strengthening its position as one of the key producers of food grains in the world.

The Prime Minister also noted the rapid increase in honey production, which has increased from 76,000 to over 150,000 tonnes in a few years. The Honey Mission programme has contributed to the distribution of 225,000 new beehives, which has created additional sources of income for thousands of rural families and given a boost to the beekeeping industry.
