NEW DELHI – India’s food security is off to a solid start this year, with both wheat and rice stocks reaching record highs, alleviating any concerns over supply shortages. As of April 1, the country’s wheat reserves stood at an impressive 11.8 million metric tons, a 57% increase from the previous year. At the same time, state reserves of rice, including unmilled paddy, reached an all-time high of 63.09 million tons. These abundant stocks are not only crucial for domestic needs but also position India as a dominant force in global food exports.
India, the world’s largest exporter of rice, is in a unique position to continue its leadership in the global market. With around 40% of the world’s rice exports coming from India, the country’s bumper rice reserves provide a strong foundation for increased exports without compromising domestic supply.
