India’s first ethanol powered car coming in August?
In a recent conference in Nagpur, Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, announced Toyota’s plans to launch a flex-fuel version of the Camry in August. This move aligns with India’s push towards sustainable transportation. Gadkari highlighted the economic benefits, stating that ethanol, priced at Rs 60 per liter, could offer significant savings compared to petrol at Rs 120 per liter. Toyota’s commitment to alternative fuels, exemplified by its hydrogen car Mirai and flex-fuel Corolla Altis, reflects a broader industry trend towards greener options.
Rising fuel prices and pollution worries have forced manufacturers to look for sustainable options. A lot of manufacturers are pushing for electric vehicles, but some manufacturers are also trying out alternate fuel options. One such option which even has backing from the government is ethanol-based cars. Nitin Gadkari has been especially vocal about bringing ethanol-powered cars into the country. Gadkari revealed that Toyota plans a flex-fuel version of the Camry in August this year. This is not the first time that such claims have been made, but hopefully, this time, they come to fruition.
In this, Gadkari said, “If you compare ethanol with petrol, it will be Rs 15 per litre of petrol because ethanol’s rate is Rs 60 while the rate of petrol is Rs 120 per litre. Plus it would generate 40 percent of electricity. The average cost of ethanol would be Rs 15 per litre.Toyota has showcased several of its alternate fuel options in the last few years. In 2022, it showcased its first hydrogen car, the Mirai and also the flex-fuel Corolla Altis. Toyota has been investing in a lot of alternative fuel options. It has also been partnering with other Japanese manufacturers to explore the viability of alternative fuels. According to Toyota, converting internal combustion engines to such green fuels would be better in the long run.
