India’s first ethanol powered car coming in August?
In a recent conference in Nagpur, Minister Nitin Gadkari announced India’s move towards 100% ethanol-based vehicles, with Toyota set to launch a flex-fuel version of the Camry by August. Gadkari highlighted ethanol’s cost benefits, predicting it at Rs 60 per litre versus petrol’s Rs 120, alongside electricity generation. Toyota, which previously introduced hydrogen and flex-fuel models like the Mirai and Corolla Altis, continues to invest in sustainable fuel technologies with Japanese partnerships.
Rising fuel prices and pollution worries have forced manufacturers to look for sustainable options. A lot of manufacturers are pushing for electric vehicles, but some manufacturers are also trying out alternate fuel options. One such option which even has backing from the government is ethanol-based cars. Nitin Gadkari has been especially vocal about bringing ethanol-powered cars into the country. Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Road Road Transport and Highways, in a conference in Nagpur, has stated that vehicles running on 100% ethanol will soon be launched. Gadkari revealed that Toyota plans a flex-fuel version of the Camry in August this year. This is not the first time that such claims have been made, but hopefully, this time, they come to fruition.
In this, Gadkari said, “If you compare ethanol with petrol, it will be Rs 15 per litre of petrol because ethanol’s rate is Rs 60 while the rate of petrol is Rs 120 per litre. Plus it would generate 40 percent of electricity. The average cost of ethanol would be Rs 15 per litre.Toyota has showcased several of its alternate fuel options in the last few years. In 2022, it showcased its first hydrogen car, the Mirai and also the flex-fuel Corolla Altis. Toyota has been investing in a lot of alternative fuel options. It has also been partnering with other Japanese manufacturers to explore the viability of alternative fuels. According to Toyota, converting internal combustion engines to such green fuels would be better in the long run.
