India’s Sugar Production Dips by 12%: A March Towards Ethanol

India’s sugar production has declined by 12% to 197 lakh tonnes by mid-February, mainly due to lower output in Maharashtra and Karnataka. The Indian Sugar and Bio Energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA) attributes this drop to increased diversion of sugar for ethanol production, aligning with India’s ethanol blending program.

In a significant development, India’s sugar output experienced a notable decline of 12%, registering at 197 lakh tonnes by mid-February, according to the Indian Sugar and Bio Energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA).

The decrease is largely attributed to diminished production in Maharashtra and Karnataka. The country’s sugar marketing year extends from October to September, and current figures reflect the diversion of sugar towards ethanol production.

ISMA reports indicate that sugar production until February 15, 2025, shows a decrease from the previous year’s 224.15 lakh tonnes to 197.03 lakh tonnes. Ethanol-related sugar diversion also increased, evidently impacting total sugar output.
