Indonesia bans rice imports

Indonesia has imposed a ban on rice imports, President Prabowo Subianto confirmed. Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Suleiman said strong national reserves and a projected 34.8 million-ton output in 2025 remove the need for foreign supplies. Authorities will strictly block illegal imports, and the policy is already pushing Vietnamese and Thai rice prices lower globally.

The Indonesian President announced a ban on rice imports, according to the Antara news agency.

“President Prabowo Subianto has announced that rice imports are banned,” said Indonesian Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Suleiman. According to the Minister, the country does not need to import rice due to its large reserves and projected production of 34.8 million tons in 2025. He also emphasized that the government will prevent any attempt to import rice, especially through illegal means.

The Minister noted that the import ban is already having an impact on global prices: rice from Vietnam and Thailand has become cheaper.
