Indonesia’s Rice Reserves Highest Since 1969

Indonesia’s rice production rose by 11.95% to 16.55 million tons from January to May 2025, driven by President Prabowo Subianto’s push for higher output and profitable government purchase prices. Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman noted farmers now benefit even during peak harvests. With over 2.4 million tons procured by Bulog, Indonesia is poised to export rice to ASEAN nations.
Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman hailed the achievement as inseparable from the instruction of President Prabowo Subianto, who persistently encouraged rice production in the country. The realization, he explained, is highly contributed by the current government purchase price.
“Farmers now enjoy profitable selling prices, even during the main harvest,” the minister said in a statement.
In the Southeast Asian country, rice is one of the most closely monitored and regulated commodities, given that it is the country’s primary staple in terms of consumption. The national stockpile enables the government to intervene through market operations to control the domestic price of rice.
According to data from Statistics Indonesia, the national rice production during the January-May period this year is estimated to reach 16.55 million tons, an increase of 11.95 percent from the previous year.
As of the end of this month, Perum Bulog has absorbed more than 2.4 million tons of local rice. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, the figure has jumped more than 400 percent compared to the average absorption in the same period in the last five years, which was around 1.2 million tons.
The minister also said that Indonesia is ready to export rice to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member states as long as the domestic stockpiles remain abundant.
“A directive from the president has allowed us to prepare rice for those friendly countries, particularly neighboring countries, which need rice,” he said.
