Industry body ISMA applauds PM Modi’s leadership as India achieves 20% ethanol blending target

India has reached 20% ethanol blending with petrol in 2025, surpassing its original 2030 goal. ISMA hailed this as a major achievement, citing benefits like reduced CO₂ emissions, ₹1.18 lakh crore paid to farmers, and ₹1.36 lakh crore in forex savings.
The Indian Sugar & Bio-energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA) has congratulated the Government of India for achieving 20% ethanol blending with petrol, a milestone reached five years ahead of the original 2030 target. The association hailed the achievement as a significant step towards enhancing energy security, promoting environmental sustainability, and boosting rural development. ISMA credited the early success to the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the government’s sustained efforts in implementing the ethanol blending programme.
According to the press release, this achievement marks a defining moment in India’s journey toward self-reliance and green energy. What began as a modest 1.5% blending initiative in 2014 has now reached 20% in 2025, demonstrating remarkable growth and execution in just over a decade.
A Transformative Impact on the Nation
Massive Growth: From 38 crore litres in 2014 to 661.1 crore litres blended as of June 2025.
Climate Leadership: 698 lakh tonnes of CO₂ emissions reduced.
Farmer Welfare: ₹1.18 lakh crore paid to farmers.
Distillery Development: ₹1.96 lakh crore paid to distilleries.
Foreign Exchange Savings: ₹1.36 lakh crore conserved.
India’s ethanol economy is deeply rooted in its agricultural strength, and the sugar industry has played a central role in supplying clean biofuel to the nation. Ethanol sourced from sugarcane juice, B-heavy molasses, and other by-products has empowered farmers and boosted rural economies.
“This achievement is a monumental leap for India’s energy independence and rural prosperity. It’s a source of immense pride for every farmer, mill, and stakeholder in the ethanol ecosystem. The government’s unwavering policy direction and visionary leadership have not only made this national success possible five years ahead of schedule but have also set a powerful precedent for our collective future in green energy.” said Mr Deepak Ballani, Director General, ISMA. “It underscores what we can achieve when strong policy meets dedicated execution, propelling India towards a more sustainable and self-reliant future,” he added.
In its statement, ISMA further reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the government’s future energy and agricultural goals, stating that it remains prepared to scale even greater heights in the ethanol and clean fuel movement
