Interest in sugarcane farming dwindles
The young generation is not interested in the sugarcane fields, says former FSC board member Arvind Singh.
He said the current generation of canegrowers were between the ages of 50 and 70.
“So, after the old generation of farmers leaves, what is going to happen?” he said.
“How are we going to bring in the new generation?
“If not, the FSC and Government must come in to do sugarcane farming on a big scale with overseas labourers because we do not have the labour in Fiji.
“Before we had 22,000 cane farmers, and they were interested in sugarcane farming.
“Slowly the numbers have decreased, and now we have about 10,000 farmers.
“So, the numbers have slowly dropped.”
