Iraq reopens Umm Qasr grain berth to boost wheat imports
Iraq has resumed full operations at Berth 10 of the grain terminal at Umm Qasr Port, boosting wheat import capacity and storage efficiency. The upgrade will speed unloading, cut costs, strengthen strategic reserves, and improve logistics as the country works to stabilize domestic wheat supplies amid rising import dependence.
Iraq has resumed operations at Berth No. 10 of the grain terminal in Umm Qasr port in Basra, strengthening the country’s capacity to import and store wheat. According to the state-run General Company for Grain Trade, the facility returned to service after comprehensive maintenance and rehabilitation works.
Director General Haider Al-Karawi said the berth is now operating at full capacity, which will speed up vessel unloading, reduce operational costs, and increase company revenues. The reopening is part of broader efforts to modernize Iraq’s grain storage and transport infrastructure.
The Umm Qasr silo itself returned to full operational capacity in 2023 after years of suspension, significantly enhancing the country’s strategic grain reserves and accelerating handling of imported shipments. The latest repair works were carried out by local engineering and technical teams without involving foreign contractors.
Officials expect the restored berth to improve grain logistics efficiency and help Iraq stabilize its domestic wheat market amid rising reliance on imports.
