Japan farm minister refutes Trump claims on rice imports

Japan’s agriculture minister rebutted U.S. President Trump’s claims, stating rice imports, including from the U.S., rose 120 times year-on-year and that Japan’s rice tariffs are far below 700%.
TOKYO — Japan’s agriculture minister, Shinjiro Koizumi, pushed back Wednesday against U.S. President Donald Trump’s claim that Japan does not accept American rice imports, saying, “Rice imports from abroad, including from the U.S., had increased 120 times from a year earlier.
” Koizumi, speaking to reporters at the ministry in Tokyo, said Trump’s comments reflected an “obvious misunderstanding of the facts,” and noted that “Japan’s tariff on rice is nowhere near 700%,” referring to Trump’s past claim that Japan imposes a 700% levy on U.S. rice.
