Karnataka Farmers urged government to enforce SAP

D. Ravindran, National President of the All India Sugarcane Growers Association, urged Karnataka’s Congress government to introduce a State Advisory Price (SAP) law for sugarcane pricing. Speaking at the Karnataka Sugarcane Growers Association conference, he criticized the lack of SAP and FRP for farmers despite good yields and warned against proposed amendments to the Sugar (Control) Order, 1966.
Kalaburagi: “We must put pressure on the Congress government to introduce and implement the State Advisory Price (SAP) law for scientifically determining sugarcane prices in the state assembly session,” said D. Ravindran, National President of the All India Sugarcane Growers Association. He was speaking after inaugurating the State Conference of Sugarcane Growers organized by the Karnataka Sugarcane Growers Association in the city on Sunday. “When the SAP suspension was announced in Tamil Nadu, there was a large-scale protest. As a result, farmers there now receive an additional ₹250 per ton of sugarcane as SAP. Farmers in Punjab and Haryana are getting SAP.
However, it’s disappointing that farmers in Karnataka are not receiving FRP (Fair and Remunerative Price) or SAP despite good yields,” he said. Ad “The central government has kept farmers in the dark and is proposing to amend the Sugar (Control) Order, 1966 after discussions with sugar factory owners. If this law is implemented, factories in the states will lose the freedom to sell sugar and by-products without the center’s permission. The mandatory rule of payment within 14 days of sugarcane delivery will also end. We should not allow such a law to be implemented,” he added. Ravindran urged for a strong movement to pressure the state government to propose and implement the SAP law in the upcoming legislative assembly session, emphasizing its importance for ensuring fair prices for sugarcane farmers in Karnataka.
