Karnataka govt hopes to give competition to Maharashtra’s sugar industry, assures mills of necessary help and cooperation


Karnataka Sugar Minister Shivanand Patil has urged the Centre to prioritise sugarcane farmers’ welfare, citing unpaid dues due to export restrictions. He stated Karnataka aims to rival Maharashtra in sugar production and will support local mills accordingly. Patil also highlighted ethanol projects and announced new academic programs in sugar and alcohol technology at the S Nijalingappa Sugar Institute.
Belgavi, Karnataka: Sugar Minister Shivanand Patil has appealed to the Centre to prioritise the welfare of sugarcane farmers and stated that the Karnataka government hopes to compete with the Maharashtra sugar industry.
Speaking to media after a meeting at the S Nijalingappa Sugar Institute, Patil said, “Many mills left the pending sugar cane bills to farmers because they were not allowed to export. The factories do not have separate capital to pay the bills.”
Patil also affirmed that the Karnataka government hopes to give competition to the Maharashtra sugar industry, and in this regard, the state’s sugar factories will be provided with necessary help and cooperation.
After presenting awards to sugar mills excelling in different categories, the minister emphasized that sugar mills should prioritize farmers’ interests alongside their own growth. He called on Karnataka’s sugar mills to lead by example by utilising central projects like ethanol production.
S Nijalingappa Sugar Institute is starting undergraduate and postgraduate programs in alcohol technology and sugar technology. According to the minister, a new college building will be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 20 crore. The institute was founded to support the development of the sugar industry, and it continues to offer essential assistance and collaboration to strengthen the sector.
