Karnataka Sugar mills have agreed to pay Rs 2,950 and govt gives Rs 50 per tonne for sugarcane: Min Kharge

All five sugar mills in Kalaburagi and one in Yadgiri have agreed to pay farmers Rs 2,950 per tonne within 14 days. Minister Priyank Kharge said the rate was fixed after talks with factory owners. Heavy rains caused major crop losses, with 3.24 lakh hectares affected. Over 3.26 lakh farmers have already received Rs 250.9 crore, and Rs 243.4 crore more will be released soon as interim crop insurance compensation.

Kalaburagi: All five sugar mills in Kalaburagi district and one in Yadgiri district have agreed to pay farmers the full amount of Rs 2,950 per tonne of sugarcane within 14 days of supply.Speaking to TOI, rural development and panchayat raj and Kalaburagi district minister Priyank Kharge said: “The price of sugarcane has been fixed keeping in mind the interests of the farmers after the chief minister continuously held discussions with the sugar factory owners and representatives.” A discussion has also been held with the sugar factory of the district. Many farmers have already agreed, he said.According to a joint survey report of the agriculture, horticulture, and revenue department under NDRF guidelines, there was a 69% surplus in Aug and a 63% surplus in Sept due to continuous rains. 

A report will be submitted to the govt that crop damage is reported in an area of 3,24,205 hectares.The details of farmers whose crops have been damaged have already been recorded in the PARIHARA software, and a total of 3,26,183 farmers have received Rs 250.9 crore. Minister Kharge informed that the crop damage compensation will be deposited in the farmers’ bank accounts in the next 3–4 days.The govt has ordered interim crop insurance compensation for 2,67,560 farmers covering 3,35,046.2 hectares for cotton, sorghum, sunflower, and turmeric crops. The breakdown is as follows:- Cotton: Registered farmers 10,025; area 11,727.5 ha; estimated interim compensation Rs 9.9 crore.

Tur: Registered farmers 2,56,845; area 3,22,734 ha; estimated interim compensation Rs 232.8 crore.- Sunflower: Registered farmers 382; area 392 ha; estimated interim compensation Rs 0.2 crore.- Turmeric: Registered farmers 308; area 192.6 ha; estimated interim compensation Rs 0.4 crore.In total, 2,67,560 farmers covering 3,35,046.2 hectares are eligible for Rs 243.4 crore in interim compensation. Kharge explained that a further Rs 8.7 crore in crop insurance compensation will be deposited in farmers’ bank accounts within a few days for 22,385 farmers who reported damage to black gram, green gram, soyabean, and other crops under localised calamity.
