Kazakhstan continues to increase production of vegetable oils

Kazakhstan’s vegetable oil production rose 27 percent to 594,900 tons in the first eight months of 2025, driven by higher oilseed acreage. Sunflower oil output grew to 523,900 tons. With 88 processing plants, the country meets domestic demand and boosts exports, mainly to China, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan, while sunflower cultivation is set to expand further.
Kazakhstan’s agro-industrial complex continues to demonstrate steady growth, with vegetable oil production increasing. According to the latest data from the Bureau of National Statistics of Kazakhstan, in the first eight months of 2025, national enterprises produced 594,900 tons of products—27% more than in the same period last year.
In particular, sunflower oil production increased by 27.2% – from 411.9 thousand tons to 523.9 thousand tons.
This surge was driven by a significant increase in oilseed acreage. While 2.9 million hectares were sown in 2024, this figure reached 4 million hectares in 2025. Sunflower remains the leading crop, occupying 1.7 million hectares.
According to the results of last year’s harvest, the harvest amounted to 3.3 million tons of oilseeds, which is 53% higher than the 2023 figures (2.1 million tons).
Currently, the country has 88 processing plants with a combined production capacity of up to 4.7 million tons of raw materials per year. This allows the country not only to meet domestic demand but also to increase external supplies.
Vegetable oil exports from Kazakhstan increased by 29% in 2024. The main export destinations were:
- China – 42.4%
- Uzbekistan — 35.4%
- Tajikistan – 12.7%
As previously reported, the National Association of Oilseed Processors (NAOPC) predicts a continued trend toward increasing oilseed crop rotation: sunflower acreage in the Republic is expected to increase to 2.01 million hectares in 2026, to nearly 2.4 million hectares in 2027, and to 2.7 million hectares in 2028. Overall, the Association’s experts estimate the potential for sunflower acreage in Kazakhstan at 4 million hectares.
