Kharif crops to cover around 21L ha in Indore division

Farmers in Indore division are set to cultivate kharif crops across nearly 21 lakh hectares, focusing on soyabean, cotton, and maize, according to the farm department. Maize cultivation is expected to expand significantly to 3.4 lakh hectares due to favorable pricing from the previous season. Cotton targets have been raised to 5.6 lakh hectares, a 3% increase. With adequate rainfall and soil moisture, over 50% of sowing is complete in key areas like Indore, Dhar, and Khandwa. Soybean will cover 9.3 lakh hectares, reinforcing its prominence alongside cotton and maize in the region’s agricultural landscape.

Maize is expected to be cultivated on 3.4 lakh hectare in Indore division this season, according to the department.

The farm department has set a target of 5.6 lakh hectare for cotton in the division, up by close to 3 per cent, from the previous year.

With few rounds of showers and adequate soil moisture, farmers in most pockets of Indore, Dhar, Khandwa, Alirajpur and Jhabua among other places have completed more than 50 per cent sowing of kharif crops.

“Sowing of kharif crops is progressing well and current weather conditions are suitable for the growth of the crop. Area under maize is seen higher than the past season, while cotton acreage is also seen up,” said an official from the farm department wishing anonymity.

Farmers are likely to sow soybean on 9.3 lakh hectare and cotton is expected to cover 5.7 lakh hectare, according to the field survey compilation report of the farm department issued on June 21.

Soyabean, cotton, maize and pulses are the main kharif sown crops of Indore division. Ramswarup Patel, a farmer from Sanwer said, “We have sown soybean on 20 bigha same as last year because we do not have much option to switch. This region is well suited for soyabean and gives good yield. Climatic conditions look good and suitable for the growth of the crop.”
