Kolhapur News : Heavy rains lashed Kolhapur district during 15 days from July 15 to July 30. Due to the rains, the water of all the rivers in the district was thrown out of the container.

The rivers in the Radhanagari and Kalammawadi dam areas were heavily flooded due to which the sugarcane and paddy crops on the banks of the river were submerged and sugarcane cultivation is likely to be the most affected.

There is a fear of rotting the sugarcane crop on about 45 thousand hectares due to the rains that have been happening for the past few days. Meanwhile, if this sugarcane crop rots, the farmers are afraid of getting into a big financial crisis.

Due to the rains, around 80, the embankments were under water . Due to this, the water of all the rivers in the district will enter the agriculture in the area and the crops will suffer a lot. The most flood affected area in Kolhapur district is in Shirol and Hatkanangle talukas. Due to this Shirol, Hatkanangle and Karveer taluks will be more affected.

This is how the sugarcane crop gets hit

A layer of silt-mixed wet mud settles in the sugarcane tops, which accelerates the process of rotting. Sugarcane dries from the top down. Stems submerged in water sprout. 80 to 100 percent damage can occur if sugarcane remains in flood water for more than eight days.
