KRA nabs bhang worth Sh520,000 at Malaba border

Customs officials at Malaba One Stop Border Post in Busia County have seized 520 rolls of bhang valued at Sh520,000 and 308 jerricans of suspected ethanol. The bhang was found in a salon vehicle that fled from KRA officers, resulting in a minor collision. The suspected ethanol was intercepted by the Lwakhakha station team. Both cases are under investigation, with the items held for further action.

Customs officials at Malaba One Stop Border Post (OSBP) in Busia County have intercepted a drug shipment and suspected smuggled ethanol in two separate operations.

The Kenya Revenue Authority officials seized 520 rolls of bhang with an estimated street value of Sh520,000 and 308-20 litre Jerricans containing suspected ethanol.

KRA said officers, during regular patrols discovered a salon vehicle parked at Koteko, about 10 kilometres from KRA office.

It said the vehicle sped off as officers approached, leading to a minor collision with a KRA pickup van after which the driver of the salon car fled the scene on foot.

“The case is currently under investigation by the Anti-Narcotics Units in Malaba,” KRA said in a statement.

In a separate operation, KRA Customs and Border Control Team from Lwakhakha station, acting on intelligence, intercepted the 308 jerricans.

 KRA said the goods were being transported in a lorry.

“The items have been deposited at Malaba OSBP and will undergo further action under the customs law. KRA remains committed to combating illegal trade and ensuring the safety of the public,” the statement added.
