Lakhimpur Kheri: Flood damages nearly 3,000 hectares of sugarcane crops
Flooding from the Sharda and Ghaghra rivers has inundated 3,000 hectares of sugarcane fields in Dhaurehra, Lakhimpur Kheri, damaging crops of 584 farmers. The estimated losses are around ₹20 crore. This will likely result in reduced sugarcane supply to the Govind Sugar Mill this season.
Dhaurehra, Lakhimpur Kheri: Due to the rise in the water levels of the Sharda and Ghaghra rivers, high floods have inundated the agricultural area and damaged nearly 3,000 hectares of sugarcane crops belonging to 584 farmers in the respective area. This has led to huge monetary losses for the said farmers. Now, a reduced supply of sugarcane is anticipated at sugar mill this season, reports Amar Ujala.
The Sharda and Ghaghra rivers inundated thousands of acres of land in the Dhaurehra area. This massive waterlogging has severely damaged the crops of the farmers. The sugarcane fields of 594 farmers across 80 villages in the Govind sugar mill area—including Maharajnagar, Saraswa, Bamhori, Aira, Bhithauli, Sakethu, and Mushiyana—have dried up after being submerged by the floods. Initial estimates suggest that the farmers have suffered losses amounting to around Rs 20 crore.
Apart from suffering losses due to the floods, the sugarcane farmers have lost about 3,000 hectares of cultivated area for sugarcane in the area falling under the Govind Sugar Mill. According to the unit head, Alok Saxena, a survey concerning the damage caused by the flood was conducted.
The survey revealed that 3,000 hectares of sugarcane belonging to 584 farmers in the mill’s area were destroyed.
