Liberia Gov’t to Receive First Batch of 720 Tons of Rice from China

Liberia will receive 720 metric tons of rice from China on September 20, the first of a 3,600-ton donation agreed during FOCAC talks. Managed by an inter-ministerial committee, the aid aims to stabilize rice supplies, enhance food security, and support vulnerable communities, underscoring strong Liberia-China cooperation.

The government of Liberia, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is set to receive the first shipment of 720 metric tons of rice, part of a larger donation of 3,600 metric tons from the Government and people of the People’s Republic of China.

The first consignment, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs press release, equivalent to approximately 14,400 bags of 25 kilograms each, is scheduled to arrive at the Freeport of Monrovia on Saturday, September 20, 2025. Subsequent batches are expected to arrive throughout October and November 2025, according to shipping vessel schedules.

The donation, a generous gesture from China, was first announced during a bilateral meeting between President Xi Jinping of China and President Joseph Nyuma Boakai of Liberia on the sidelines of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) on September 6, 2024. It underscores the strong cooperation and long-standing friendship between the two countries.

The rice will be received and managed by an Inter-Ministerial Steering Committee (MSC), chaired by the Minister of Commerce and Industry, with the Chairperson of the Liberia Rice Committee serving as Vice Chairperson. The MSC, in collaboration with the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, will oversee the transparent and efficient distribution of the donation to ensure that it reaches its intended beneficiaries and supports national food security.

“The Government of Liberia extends its profound gratitude to the Government and people of the People’s Republic of China for this timely and generous demonstration of solidarity and friendship,” said a statement from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. “This contribution will significantly help stabilize the rice market and enhance food security for all Liberians.”

The grant of 3,600 metric tons of rice was formalized through an Exchange of Notes between the two governments, signed by Ambassador Yin Chengwu of China and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sara Beysolow Nyanti of Liberia. The arrangement reflects both countries’ commitment to cooperation and support in addressing Liberia’s critical food security needs.

This strategic intervention comes at a crucial time as the Liberian government intensifies efforts to stabilize rice availability and prices across the country. By supplementing domestic production, the donation is expected to ensure broader access to one of Liberia’s staple foods while supporting vulnerable communities.

With the first shipment arriving in just a few days, government officials have assured the public that the rice will be handled efficiently, and that all subsequent batches will be monitored closely to maximize the benefits of this generous international assistance.
