Madhya Pradesh : Will the wait for wheat price hike end? Why is there no price hike? Traders gave a shocking reason

Farmers in Madhya Pradesh are disappointed as wheat prices have remained stable despite guaranteed procurement at Rs 2,425 per quintal for 2025-26. The government-imposed stock limit has kept prices in check, with traders claiming it controls supply. The state government is offering an additional bonus of Rs 175 per quintal, bringing the total to Rs 2,600. Farmers hope for a price hike if the stock limit is relaxed.
Farmers are disappointed as wheat prices have not improved as expected even though wheat is being purchased at the guaranteed price in most markets in Madhya Pradesh. The central government has imposed a stock limit to ensure that wheat is available to consumers at cheaper rates, which is why traders are claiming that wheat prices are not increasing.
Guaranteed price for wheat
The MSP for wheat was fixed at Rs 2,275 per quintal for the financial year 2024-25. This year, the government has increased the MSP by Rs 150 per quintal to Rs 2,425 for 2025-26. In the new season, wheat is arriving in large quantities in the market committees of Madhya Pradesh, and as per the directives of the Central Government, the state government has also encouraged basic procurement.
This was expected to increase the price of wheat in the market and give better returns to farmers. In addition, it was expected that the government would also have to purchase less wheat at the guaranteed price given the increased prices in the open market.
Wheat prices stable in the domestic market
However, despite all these efforts, the prices of wheat in the Indore Market Committee have remained stable at the same level of Rs 2450 to 2500 per quintal. Farmers are angry that this price has not increased much compared to the guaranteed price. On Monday (17th), many farmers took back 80 to 100 trolleys of wheat that they had brought to the market for sale.
Farmers say that if the central government removes the stock limit on wheat, the demand in the market will increase and as a result the price per quintal may increase by at least Rs 100. According to traders, since the stock limit keeps the supply in the market under control, there is no major improvement in the price. Therefore, farmers are waiting for a good price for their produce.
Madhya Pradesh government will give bonus
The Madhya Pradesh government has decided to provide additional bonus to wheat along with the MSP to provide relief to farmers. Keeping in mind the interests of wheat producers, the state government has announced a bonus of Rs 175 per quintal. Therefore, farmers will get a total price of Rs 2,425 MSP and Rs 175 bonus, which will be Rs 2,600 per quintal.
The government has proposed to purchase about 8 million tonnes of wheat this season. However, farmers are upset due to the lack of expected growth in the market and are expressing hope for a price hike. Farmers and traders are demanding that the stock limit be relaxed so that wheat producers get fair remuneration.
