Maharashtra: 182 sugar mills begin crushing operations; sugar recovery rate at around 8%
Maharashtra’s 2024-25 sugarcane crushing season is in full swing, with 182 sugar mills operational, crushing 179.84 lakh tonnes of cane and producing 14.37 lakh tonnes of sugar at an average recovery rate of 7.99%. Kolhapur division leads with the highest recovery rate of 9.34%, while Solapur has processed the most cane among divisions. Cooperative and private mills are actively contributing, with Pune, Ahmednagar, Nanded, and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar divisions reporting significant output. Amravati has four mills operational, producing 1.47 lakh quintals of sugar.
As the 2024-25 sugarcane crushing season continues in Maharashtra, more sugar mills are commencing operations. As of December 12, a total of 182 sugar mills in the state have begun operations, crushing 179.84 lakh tonnes of sugarcane and producing 143.76 lakh quintals (14.37 lakh tonnes) of sugar. The state’s overall average sugar recovery rate is around 8 percent (7.99 percent).
In the Pune division, 46.58 lakh tonnes of sugarcane have been crushed, resulting in the production of 37.68 lakh quintals of sugar, with an average recovery rate of 8.09%. This division has 30 mills operating, comprising 18 cooperative mills and 12 private mills.
The Kolhapur division, with 39 operational mills (26 cooperative and 13 private), has crushed 40.95 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, yielding 38.25 lakh quintals of sugar. This division has recorded the highest recovery rate in the state, at 9.34%.
In Solapur, 40 mills are operational, including 15 cooperative mills and 25 private mills. These mills have processed 33.15 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, producing 23.33 lakh quintals of sugar, with a recovery rate of 7.04%.
The Ahmednagar division has 22 mills in operation, with 13 cooperative mills and 9 private mills. These mills have crushed 22.7 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, resulting in the production of 16.77 lakh quintals of sugar, with a recovery rate of 7.39%.
In Nanded, 27 mills, comprising 9 cooperative and 18 private mills, have crushed 19.93 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, producing 16.23 lakh quintals of sugar, with a recovery rate of 8.14%. In the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar division, 19 mills (11 cooperative and 8 private) have crushed 14.54 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, to produce 10.03 lakh quintals of sugar.
In the Amravati division, 4 sugar mills have started operations, including 1 cooperative and 3 private mills. These mills have crushed 1.95 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, producing 1.47 lakh quintals of sugar.
