Maharashtra : Rain damages maize & other crops on 21,500 hectares in five Nashik region districts in May

Severe rain and strong winds from May 5 to 25 damaged crops across 21,500 hectares in five Nashik region districts, affecting over 40,000 farmers. Jalgaon saw the worst impact, followed by Nashik and Ahilyanagar. Key crops hit include bananas, onions, and maize. Farmers’ groups urge immediate government relief due to significant financial losses.

Nashik: Severe rainfall and strong winds caused extensive damage to crops and orchards across approximately 21,500 hectares in five districts of the Nashik region — Nashik, Jalgaon, Ahilyanagar, Dhule, and Nandurbar — between May 5 and 25.The adverse weather conditions affected more than 40,000 farmers across 2,200-plus villages in these districts over the 20-day period. The rainfall caused significant damage to various crops, including bananas, onions, maize, papayas, jowar, bajra, and vegetables.Jalgaon district experienced the most severe impact, with approximately 11,000 hectares of damaged crops.

The damage included 6,100 hectares of bananas, 1,000 hectares of maize, and 400 hectares of papaya. Kurban Tadvi, the superintending agriculture officer, Jalgaon district, reported that bananas suffered severe damage across 55% of the total affected area. “We are still making a primary assessment of the crop losses in the district that is still receiving showers,” said Tadvi.Nashik district recorded the second-highest damage, with 6,800 hectares affected. The damage included 3,000 hectares of onions, 650 hectares of mangoes, and 300 hectares of vegetables.

The rainfall affected over 21,000 farmers across more than 950 villages in the district.Ahilyanagar district reported damage across 1,200 hectares, primarily affecting onions, tomatoes, and other vegetables. “We are conducting an assessment of the crop losses due to rain in May. Around 50% of the crops damaged due to rain are onions, while vegetables have also been damaged in the district,” said Sudhakar Borale, superintending agriculture officer of Ahilyanagar district.Dhule district reported crop damage across 2,348 hectares, affecting onions, mangoes, bananas, maize, jowar, and other crops. Nandurbar experienced minimal impact, with approximately 175 hectares of damage. Agricultural officials attributed this to lower rainfall intensity compared to Nashik and Jalgaon, with damage limited to bananas, papaya, and maize.Bharat Dighole, the president of the Maharashtra State Onion Growers Association, highlighted the financial impact on farmers across the five districts.

“Farmers have already incurred heavy losses.
