Maharashtra : State mills produce 13 lakh tonnes of sugar in two weeks

Maharashtra has produced 13 lakh tonnes of sugar in the last two weeks, with Kolhapur and Pune divisions leading production. Currently, 190 mills are operational, down from 204 last year. Total sugar output is projected at 100-102 lakh tonnes for the 2024-25 season, with 10-12 lakh tonnes diverted for ethanol. Average FRP in Kolhapur exceeds ₹3,000/tonne.

Kolhapur: At least 13 lakh tonnes of sugar was produced in the state in the last couple of weeks as compared to 16 lakh tonnes in the preceding four weeks, following the start of cane crushing season on Nov 16.Kolhapur and Pune divisions top the sugar production list. Currently, 190 sugar mills are operational in the state. Last year, at the same time, 204 mills were operational, and had produced 38 lakh tonnes.According to experts, the sugar cane harvesting season is likely to last until the end of March.

It is estimated that sugar production in Maharashtra is likely to remain between 100-102 lakh tonnes at the end of the season. “Around 10-12 lakh tonnes of sugar will be diverted for ethanol production. The net production of sugar in Maharashtra will thus be around 90 lakh tonnes at the end of the 2024-25 season. It will be around 10 lakh tonnes less than the previous crushing season,” B B Thombare, president of Western India Sugar Mills Association, said.So far, 9.70 lakh tonnes of sugar cane have been crushed, and the average recovery rate stands at 8.6%.

Meanwhile, the sugar commissionerate in Pune has fixed the fair and remunerative price (FRP) for every mill in the state based on the recovery so far. The average FRP for sugar mills from Kolhapur is above Rs 3,000 per tonne. The sugar mills are mandated to not pay less than the FRP fixed and that too within 15 days of harvesting the canes.
