Maharashtra: Sugar production drops by 8.9 lakh tonnes compared to previous season
Maharashtra’s 2024-25 sugar season shows decreased production, with 303.53 lakh tonnes of sugarcane crushed, down from 395.36 lakh tonnes last season. Sugar production has dropped to 258.14 lakh quintals, with an 8.5% recovery rate. Operational mills have reduced to 189, compared to 203 last season, with Kolhapur leading in recovery at 10.01% and Solapur showing the lowest at 7.52%.
With sugar mills continuing operations in Maharashtra during the 2024-25 season, sugarcane crushing and sugar production are down compared to the previous season. As of December 26, sugar production has decreased by 89.02 lakh quintals (around 8.9 lakh tonnes) compared to the same period last season.
According to the Sugar Commissionerate report, statewide, sugar mills have crushed 303.53 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, lower than the 395.36 lakh tonnes crushed during the same period last season. Sugar production has reached 258.14 lakh quintals, down from 347.16 lakh quintals in the previous season. The state’s overall sugar recovery rate stands at 8.5%, lower than last season’s rate of 8.78% during the same period.
In the ongoing season, 189 sugar mills are operational in Maharashtra, lower than 203 sugar mills in season 2023-24.
In the Pune division, 76.54 lakh tonnes of sugarcane have been crushed, resulting in the production of 65.94 lakh quintals of sugar, with an average recovery rate of 8.62%. This division has 31 mills operating, including 18 cooperative mills and 13 private mills.
The Kolhapur division, with 39 operational mills (26 cooperative and 13 private), has crushed 70.06 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, yielding 70.16 lakh quintals of sugar. This division has recorded the highest recovery rate in the state, at 10.01%.
In Solapur, 41 mills are operational, including 16 cooperative mills and 25 private mills. These mills have processed 53.04 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, producing 39.86 lakh quintals of sugar, with a recovery rate of 7.52%.
The Ahmednagar division has 25 mills in operation, comprising 15 cooperative mills and 10 private mills. These mills have crushed 38.64 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, resulting in the production of 30.36 lakh quintals of sugar, with a recovery rate of 7.86%.
In Nanded, 28 mills—comprising 9 cooperative and 19 private mills—have crushed 34.78 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, producing 29.83 lakh quintals of sugar, with a recovery rate of 8.58%. In the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar division, 19 mills (11 cooperative and 8 private) have crushed 26.94 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, producing 19.19 lakh quintals of sugar.
In the Amravati division, 4 sugar mills have started operations, including 1 cooperative and 3 private mills. These mills have crushed 3.24 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, producing 2.62 lakh quintals of sugar. In the Nagpur division, two sugar mills have begun crushing operations.
