Maharashtra sugar season nears end, output dips 25% amid lower production and financial concerns

Maharashtra’s sugar crushing season is nearing its end, with 182 of 200 mills shutting down. Sugar mills have crushed 843.33 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, yielding 797.48 lakh quintals of sugar—down 25% from last season’s 1067.5 lakh quintals. The decline highlights challenges faced by the industry amid lower yields and operational constraints.

According to data released by the Sugar Commissioner’s Office, sugar mills in the state have crushed 843.33 lakh tonnes of sugarcane so far, With 182 out of 200 sugar mills shutting down operations, Maharashtra’s sugar crushing season for 2024-25 is drawing to a close. The state has recorded a sharp decline in sugar production this year, with total output reaching only 797.48 lakh quintals —significantly lower by about 25 per cent compared to the 1067.5 lakh quintals produced in the previous season.
