Maharashtra is one of India’s largest sugar-producing states, with around hundreds of cooperative and private mills operating each season. Delays in payment to farmers have been a persistent issue, often leading to protests.

This announcement was part of a broader set of policy decisions taken during a high-level, multi-departmental meeting convened to resolve long-standing demands of various rural groups. Maharashtra Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule played a key role in facilitating this meeting, which was organized in response to an agitation led by Prahar Janshakti Party leader Bachchu Kadu.

The meeting, held at the state legislature, brought together key cabinet ministers, including Agriculture Minister Manikrao Kokate, Fisheries and Ports Minister Nitesh Rane, Marketing Minister Jaykumar Rawal, Rural Development Minister Jaykumar Gore, Dairy Development Minister Atul Save, Cooperation Minister Babasaheb Patil, Employment Guarantee Minister Bharat Gogawale, Senior bureaucrats from relevant departments also participated, ensuring a comprehensive approach to the issues at hand. The standout feature of the meeting was Bawankule’s swift coordination between departments and direct communication with central ministers to secure timely solutions.
