Maize Improvement Centre nods Zambia’s crop production

Zambia’s maize yields have risen to 10 tonnes per hectare among small-scale farmers, thanks to strategies under the SIFAZ project, as noted by CIMMYT agronomist Dr. Christian Thierfelder. The Zambia Agriculture Research Institute continues developing improved crop varieties, while economist Hambulo Ngoma highlights increased technology adoption.

NAIS- The International Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre is impressed with Zambia’s adoption of strategies, which have resulted in increased maize crop hectarage production.

Centre Principal Cropping Systems Agronomist, CHRISTIAN THIERFELDER has observed that these strategies have increased maize yields up to 10 tonnes per hectare among small scale farmers.

Dr THIERFELDER said this in Lusaka during the annual review and planning meeting for the Sustainable Intensification of Smallholder Farming System Project in Zambia.

And Zambia Agriculture Research Institute Chief Agriculture Research Officer, RODGERS KABITI said the institute will continue to conduct research in crops and soils to generate improved crop varieties.

Meanwhile, Centre Agriculture Economist, HAMBULO NGOMA said there is a remarkable increase in the adoption of technologies and practices under the SIFAZ project.
