Malaysia : Sabah Asked To Stay Calm As Rice Supply Remains Sufficient

Sabah has sufficient rice supplies despite temporary shortages in supermarkets in Sepanggar, which authorities attribute to panic buying rather than actual supply disruption. Officials, citing data from Padiberas Nasional Berhad (Bernas), have urged consumers to avoid bulk purchases, noting that traditional markets and smaller retailers still have adequate stock.

Rice supplies in Sabah remain sufficient despite shortages reported at several major supermarkets in Sepanggar, says Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Sabah and Sarawak) Datuk Mustapha Sakmud.

He said updates from Padiberas Nasional Berhad (Bernas) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, as well as on-ground checks at storage facilities, confirmed adequate stock levels across the state.

Mustapha, who is also the MP for Sepanggar, said the shortages were driven by panic buying rather than supply disruption.

He noted that bulk purchases caused stocks at major supermarkets and chain stores to run out faster, while traditional markets and smaller retailers continue to have sufficient supply.

“I urge the public to remain calm and practise prudent, needs-based shopping,” he said.

He added that the government will intensify coordinated monitoring involving the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security and the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living to ensure supply stability and safeguard public welfare amid global uncertainties.
