Min: 99% pending dues of sugarcane farmers settled

Belagavi: Karnataka’s Sugar Minister Shivanand Patil announced that 99% of the dues owed to sugarcane farmers, amounting to over Rs 20,000 crore, have been settled by sugar mills. He assured that remaining payments would be made soon. Patil also mentioned government efforts to address issues with sugarcane weighing by installing new machines.

Belagavi: Sugar minister Shivanand Patil said 99% of the dues of the sugarcane farmers have been settled by sugar mills in the state. Speaking at S Nijalingappa Sugar Institute on Tuesday, Patil said, “The factories in Karnataka have paid 99% of the dues to farmers whose bill is worth more than Rs 20,000 crore. A few factories have said they would pay the dues soon after selling sugar.”“Action is being taken against those cheating farmers in sugarcane weighing.

Tenders have been called by the govt to install weighing machines. The interest of farmers will be protected,” he added. “The controversy of issuing clearance certificate from the Karnataka Pollution Control Board to give permission to Siddhasiri sugar factory belonging to Vijayapura MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal in Chincholi taluk of Kalaburagi district is not related to my department. There is no govt interference in this,” he said. “Even my sugar factory was also closed once due to non-clearance from the pollution control board,” he added.
