Ministers’ panel seen fixing a floor price of $500/tonne on non-Basmati rice exports


A committee headed by Home Minister Amit Shah is set to decide on imposing a minimum export price (MEP) of $500/tonne for non-basmati rice exports this week. However, the proposal to lower the MEP for Basmati rice from the current $950/tonne is expected to be deferred. This decision aims to stabilize exports and ensure competitive pricing amid fluctuating international markets, reflecting efforts to manage India’s position as a major rice exporter amidst global competition.
The committee of ministers headed by Home Minister Amit Shah may decide this week on a proposal to fix a minimum export price (MEP) of $500/tonne on shipments of non-basmati rice, while the proposal to reduce the current MEP of $950/tonne on Basmati rice may be deferred for now, sources said.
