Ministry works to open new rice export market from Cambodia to the Philippines
The Philippines is exploring direct purchases of Cambodian rice following a meeting between Cambodia’s Agriculture Minister Dith Tina and a Philippine business delegation. Talks with the Cambodia Rice Federation aim to establish export channels, giving the Philippines reliable supply while boosting Cambodian rice exports, mill capacity, and farmer incomes.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries convened a working meeting with a business delegation from the Philippines to examine the potential for direct rice purchases from Cambodia. The meeting was chaired by Minister Dith Tina and occurred through close collaboration and direct facilitation between the agriculture ministries of both nations.
The Philippine delegation was led by Joseph Rudolf Lo, President and CEO of Food Terminal Incorporated. The company is exploring options to directly source Cambodian rice for the Philippine market, which would create an additional export channel for Cambodian farmers.
To support the process and ensure effective outcomes, the Ministry arranged a direct meeting between the Philippine delegation and the Cambodia Rice Federation to discuss export potential in greater detail and encourage early implementation of direct purchase agreements.
The initiative is expected to bring mutual benefits to both countries. The Philippines would gain access to a reliable supply of high-quality Cambodian rice, while Cambodia would secure a new international export market.
Opening this new market will also enable the Ministry’s partner rice mills to increase their capacity to buy paddy rice from Cambodian farmers, helping to strengthen rural incomes and improve livelihoods across the rice-producing regions.
