Morocco extends wheat import subsidy program until December 2025 amid ongoing drought

Morocco has extended its wheat import subsidy program until December 31, 2025, due to ongoing drought-related harvest shortfalls. Originally set to end in April, the subsidy now runs from May 1, ensuring stable wheat supplies. With production down 43% last year, Morocco remains a key wheat importer, relying on supplies from the EU and Russia.

Morocco’s National Office of Cereals and Legumes announced the extension of its wheat import subsidy program until December 31, 2025, due to the continuing impact of drought on domestic harvests.

The subsidy, which had been set to end in April, will now run from May 1 through the end of the year, with further details to follow.

This decision highlights that Morocco’s upcoming harvest will not be sufficient to meet demand, marking a shift from previous years when the country sometimes restricted wheat imports during favorable harvests.

Over the past two years, droughts have severely reduced production, with Morocco’s wheat and barley output falling by 43% last year.

Morocco has become an increasingly important importer of wheat, particularly from the European Union and Russia. The government will continue supporting wheat importers to ensure stable supplies throughout 2025.
