MP Sahney to take up issue of MEP on basmati rice with Union minister Goyal
Chandigarh: AAP MP Vikramjit Singh Sahney will lead a delegation of MPs from Punjab to meet Union minister for consumer affairs Piyush Goyal to seek his intervention into the demand for rationalising the minimum export price (MEP) ) for basmati rice fixed at $1,200 per tonne. Sahney, along with the office-bearers of the Basmati exporters’ association, took up the matter with Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal and Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann in an industrial interaction meeting “Sarkar Sanatkar Milni” in Amritsar, appealing to them to resolve the issue. Mann authorised Sahney to take a delegation and meet Goyal. The CM would also write a DO letter to the union minister for relaxation in the rice export norms. Sahney said he had received a request from and Exporters Association — the leading association for basmati rice trade in India — regarding the central government’s decision of minimum export price.Sahney said if a lower priced variety of rice goes out of India and export of one with higher price is restricted, then the agenda of controlling prices will fail. tnn
