Myanmar bags US$447M from maize exports in FY 2024-2025

Myanmar exported over 1.88 million tonnes of maize, earning US$447 million in FY 2024-2025. Thailand is the top importer, with maize also sent to China, India, the Philippines, and Bangladesh. From February 1 to August 31, Thailand will import maize duty-free, while imposing a 73% tariff outside this period. Myanmar’s maize is also traded with China through cross-border agreements.

Myanmar exported over 1.88 million tonnes of maize to foreign markets from April to November during the current financial year 2024-2025, bagging US$447 million, according to Myanmar Corn Merchants Association.
Thailand is the top importer of Myanmar’s maize. It is currently sent to China, India, the Philippines and Bangladesh.
“Myanmar’s maize is in high demand among both foreign buyers and domestic feed processing factories. Starting from 1 February, maize will be sent to Thailand with the exemption of the Customs Tariff.
Thailand gives the green light for maize imports under zero tariff (with Form-D), between 1 February and 31 August. However, Thailand imposes a maximum tax rate of 73 per cent on maize imports to protect the rights of their growers if the maize is imported during the maize season of Thailand. Therefore, traders are stocking them to export under duty exemption.
Additionally, China has been purchasing Myanmar’s maize through cross-border trade under the alternative development programme.

Legitimate maize trade between Myanmar and China commenced at the end of 2023. A total of 112 Myanmar companies have been permitted for maize exports.
Myanmar exports around two million tonnes of maize. The corn is cultivated in Shan, Kachin, Kayah and Kayin states and Mandalay, Sagaing and Magway regions. Myanmar has three corn seasons – winter, summer and monsoon. Myanmar’s annual corn output is estimated at 2.5-3 million tonnes.
