Mysuru sugarcane growers to celebrate World Farmers’ Day
The State Sugarcane Growers Association in Mysuru will celebrate World Farmers’ Day on December 31 at Kalamandir, with CM Siddaramaiah and key ministers attending. Farmers will urge the government to set ₹5,500 MSP for sugarcane, clear ₹950 crore arrears, waive loans, offer crop incentives, compensate wildlife damages, and ensure irrigation support. Mysuru: Members of the State Sugarcane Growers Association have decided to hold World Farmers’ Day celebrations on Dec 31 at Kalamandir in the city.A decision to this effect was taken at the preliminary meeting chaired by the association chief Hallikere Hundi Bhagyaraj, held at Kuvempu Park near Gun House Circle in the city on Saturday.Addressing the meeting, Bhagyaraj said that Suttur Mutt Seer Shivarathri Deshikendra Swami will participate along with CM Siddaramaiah, deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar, state revenue minister Krishna Byregowda, agriculture minister N Cheluvarayaswamy, and sugar and agriculture marketing minister Shivanand Patil.During the event, the association also decided to urge the state govt to fulfil various demands, including fixing a minimum support price of Rs 5,500 per tonne of sugarcane supplied to sugar mills for the next crushing season, directing the sugar mills to clear the arrears of pending Rs 950 crore to farmers, waiving off crop loans, providing incentives of Rs 500 per quintal of paddy and other crops whenever their price crashes in the market, providing scientific compensation to farmers who suffer crop loss due to wild animal menace, and continuing to provide transformer and electricity poles for irrigation pumpset farmers, among other demands.
