Nagpur: With the festive season pushing up the demand for edible oil, the crime branch of Nagpur Police
busted a racket involved in manufacturing and selling fake soybean oil under the labels of popular brands. A total of 46 boxes of fake edible oil, along with packaging machines, empty oil drums, electronic weighing scales, and counterfeit labels worth Rs 1.18 lakh, were recovered from the spot.

Based on a tip-off, officers of Crime Branch Unit 4 were patrolling in Lakadganj on Tuesday, around 6 pm,
when they received information about counterfeit edible oil being stored and sold in Mokhare Mohalla, ward No. 38 in the area.

Swinging into action, the police team raided the godown and caught accused Vasudev Khandwani, 65, a
resident of Lakadganj, red-handed. During the search, police seized a huge quantity of counterfeit soybean oil packed in boxes bearing fake stickers and logos of well-known brands.

The accused, taking advantage of the rising demand for edible oil during the ongoing festive season, was
pushing fake products into the market, posing a serious threat to public health and consumer safety.

Following the seizure, a case was registered against Khandwani under Section 318(4) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Sections 51, 63, and 64 of the Copyright Act at Lakadganj Police Station. The accused, along with the seized materials, was handed over to the local police for further investigation.

The operation was carried out under the guidance of city police commissioner Ravinder Kumar Singal, joint commissioner Nisar Tamboli, additional commissioner (crime) Sanjay Patil, DCP (detection) Rahul Maknikar, and crime branch senior PI Abhijit Patil.

The team led by PI Kamlakar Gaddime executed the raid successfully.

Further investigation is underway to trace the supply chain and other people involved in the racket. Police officials have urged people to remain cautious while purchasing edible oil, especially during the festive season when the risk of counterfeit products in the market tends to increase.
