Nepal : Lawmakers demand reversal of sugarcane subsidy cancellation

Nepalese lawmakers have condemned the government’s decision to cancel the longstanding Rs. 70/quintal sugarcane subsidy, effective next fiscal year. Speaking in the National Assembly, MPs warned the move would harm farmer livelihoods, especially in key districts like Rautahat and Sarlahi. They urged an immediate reversal, calling the decision neglectful and damaging to the already struggling agricultural sector.
KATHMANDU: Lawmakers in the National Assembly on Thursday strongly objected to the government’s decision to cancel the longstanding subsidy provided to sugarcane farmers, urging the government to immediately reverse the move.
Speaking during Zero Hour, several members expressed dissatisfaction over the government’s plan to discontinue the Rs. 70 per quintal production subsidy starting from the upcoming fiscal year.
They warned that scrapping a benefit that has been in place for over three decades would severely impact farmers’ livelihoods.
“This is nothing but an act of neglect toward farmers. The decision must be withdrawn without delay,” said lawmaker Dr. Beduram Bhusal, drawing the government’s attention through the Chair.
Similarly, lawmaker Gopi Bahadur Sarki Achhami warned that farmers in districts like Rautahat, Sarlahi, and Mahottari would be demoralized by the cancellation of the subsidy.
Lawmaker Mrigendra Kumar Singh Yadav also called on the government to reconsider the decision, highlighting the need to support the struggling agricultural sector.
