Nepal : Maoist Centre asks govt to immediately release dues of sugarcane farmers

The CPN (Maoist Centre) has urged Nepal’s government to immediately clear all dues owed to sugarcane farmers. Vice Chairman Agni Prasad Sapkota criticized the reduced support price as anti-farmer and called for revising subsidies. The party demanded fair pricing, respect for farmers’ rights, and prompt action on their sit-in protests in Kathmandu.

Kathmandu, Aug 28: The CPN (Maoist Centre) has expressed its solidarity with the sugarcane farmers and has asked the government to immediately release the entire dues to be paid to the sugarcane farmers.

CPN (Maoist Centre) Spokesperson and Vice Chairman Agni Prasad Sapkota has asked the government to pay off the farmers’ hard work, ensure their rights and extend respect.

Issuing a press statement on Thursday, the Maoist Centre stated that the party’s attention was drawn to the farmers’ obligation to stage sit-in at Maitighar Mandala in Kathmandu.

The Maoist Centre has stated that the government’s act to decrease the support price of sugarcane was a disrespect to farmers as well as an anti-peasant and irresponsible act.

The party has urged the government to take the farmers’ demands seriously and address all the genuine demands, asking the government to fix the support price for sugarcane and rework on the subsidy given in the sugarcane production by realising that the farmers are the backbone of the production system and the agriculture sector as a foundation of the national economy.
