Nepal : Rs 330 million budget allocated to increase rice production by 1.2 million tons

Nepal has launched a strategy to boost rice production amid domestic shortages. Finance Minister Bishnu Paudel announced a Rs 330 million budget to enhance Chaite rice cultivation in 22 Terai districts. The government aims to increase rice output by 1.2 million tons and achieve self-reliance in rice production within two years, reducing dependence on imports.

KATHMANDU, May 29: As the country faces a shortage of domestically produced food, leading to rice imports, the government has adopted a strategy to increase rice production.

Finance Minister Bishnu Paudel stated in the budget speech for the upcoming Fiscal Year (FY) 2025/25 that the government has launched programs to achieve self-reliance in rice production within two years.

A budget of Rs 330 million has been set aside to increase Chaite rice production in 22 Terai districts. The government aims to increase rice production by 1.2 million tons.
