Nepal: Sugar imports surge in first six months of fiscal year 2024-25
In Nepal, the import of sugar, rice, lentils, and cotton fabric has surged in the first half of fiscal year 2024/25. Sugar imports saw a dramatic 16-fold increase, reaching Rs. 141.292 million, up from Rs. 8.473 million during the same period last year. Consequently, revenue from sugar imports rose by Rs. 58.387 million, reaching Rs. 62.376 million.
The import of sugar, rice, lentils, and cotton fabric has started to pick up again.
In the first half of the current fiscal year 2024/25, there has been a notable increase in the import of these goods.
As per the Nepalgunj Customs Office, the import of sugar which had dropped the most in the previous year, has risen by around 16-fold in the first six months of the current fiscal year, reported The Rising Nepal.
The office noted that sugar imports during the same period in the previous fiscal year 2023/24 amounted to Rs. 8.473 million, whereas this year, the figure has reached Rs. 141.292 million, the media report further added.
Revenue generated from sugar imports, which stood at Rs. 3.989 million in the first six months of last fiscal year, rose to Rs. 62.376 million during the same period this year. This marks an increase of Rs. 58.387 million in revenue from sugar imports.
