Nepal: Sugar production ratio declines in Mahottari

The sugar recovery rate from sugarcane has declined this fiscal year, with Everest Sugar Industry in Mahottari producing 8.72 kg of sugar per quintal of sugarcane, down from 9.11 kg last year. General Manager Surendra Shukla stated that an investigation is underway to determine the cause. Farmers attribute the decline to insufficient rainfall during the monsoon and winter seasons. The industry also fell short of its crushing target by nearly 400,000 quintals.
Mahottari, Nepal: The sugar production ratio (Sugar recovery rate) from sugarcane has dropped this year compared to the previous year.
This fiscal year, the industry has produced 8.72 kg of sugar per quintal of sugarcane, down from 9.11 kg last year, according to Surendra Shukla, General Manager of Everest Sugar Industry, located in Gaushala Municipality-1, according to the Radio Nepal Online.
Additionally, it fell short of its crushing target by nearly 400,000 quintals. This year, it processed 3.1 million quintals of sugarcane, resulting in 270,588 quintals of sugar.
In comparison, last year’s production was 264,591 quintals of sugar from 2.9 million quintals of sugarcane.
Shukla mentioned that an investigation is underway to determine the cause behind the decrease in the sugar production ratio.
Farmers, on the other hand, attribute the decline to insufficient rainfall.
Mahendra Mahato, a farmer from Pashupatinagar in Bardibas Municipality-9, noted that the lack of winter rainfall and unfavorable monsoon conditions may have negatively impacted sugarcane yields.
Everest Sugar Industry had initially targeted crushing 3.5 million quintals of sugarcane and producing 315,000 quintals of sugar this year. However, due to the sugarcane shortage, Shukla stated that it is unlikely the target will be met.
